A large part of the Dutch sewer system was built in the 1960s and 1970s, and its ’lifetime’ is coming to an end. Many municipalities are replacing this old sewer system, which often still consists of a mixed system, with a separate system where rainwater is, wherever possible, infiltrated into the soil through an infiltration ditch or the construction of wadis. Because the sewer system is often located under the roadway, when replacing the sewer system, the road itself is also redesigned.

For the municipality of Renkum, Buro Antares is conducting an infrastructure study on-site at Utrechtseweg and Patrimoniumweg from its facility in Zutphen. A similar study has been carried out for the municipality of Schiedam on-site at Rotterdamsedijk, Koemarkt, Gerrit Verboonstraat and Oranjestraat.

Research on the tar content of the asphalt pavement

Infrastructure research involves examining the tar content of the asphalt pavement in one research phase after thorough preliminary research; the possibilities for reusing the underlying foundation layer are determined; and the quality of the soil is then assessed to the extent of the intended excavation depth.

To determine whether the soil is suitable for the infiltration of rainwater, permeability measurements are carried out. These measurements take place in the unsaturated zone (above the groundwater level) using the Aardvark method.

One combined research phase

By conducting the combined studies, a complete picture of the situation on site is obtained in one research phase. The drill used for the study of the quality of the asphalt is drilled and also used to determine the quality of the underlying foundation and soil layers.

Based on the research results, the design of the new sewer system and the reconstruction of the roads can be made.

Traffic measures and guidelines

Points to consider in such research include the traffic measures to be taken to minimize the inconvenience to road users. Buro Antares has already gained extensive experience in conducting such infrastructure research.

The tests are carried out in accordance with CROW 210, CROW 400, NEN 5725, NEN 5740, NEN 5707, NEN 5707 and the RAW. For more information, please Contact recording with Messrs. M. Roording and M. Steman from our branch in Zutphen.
