Investigation of possible obstacles to groundwater extraction from fire water wells at the Pernis, Botlek, Europoort and Maasvlakte sites. These sites are part of the Rotterdam port rail line.

During the study, the influence of groundwater extraction on the environment was analytically calculated. In this process, the movement of currently present groundwater pollutants in the water-carrying package towards the extraction wells was determined using a worst-case approach. This approach was based on a retardation factor for the most mobile pollutant. Furthermore, it was examined whether subsidence and/or drought damage were caused by groundwater extraction. Additionally, to gain an understanding of the salinization process, research was conducted into the chloride content in the groundwater to be extracted.

The research results are used by ProRail for the further development of the design of the firefighting water supply systems and the associated contract formation (engineering and execution).
